I don’t really have a suitable photo to illustrate this post and instead will share these cakes that I baked this past Saturday. After the big Sichuan dinner, we all headed back to our flat to eat cake!

I used recipes I’d tried before from Orangette – the chocolate fondant cake and the lemon yogurt cake. The chocolate cake never fails but this time, the lemon cake didn’t bake evenly and so I had to perform some cake surgery to remove the offending parts. Instead of the suggested glaze, I made a lemon buttercream to frost it. I know these aren’t at all Chinese desserts but they were a nice way to finish our Chinese celebrations!

Happy Chinese New Year to you Su Lin. Your cakes look delicious. Thanks for the hints to look at Orangette. I follow Nigella Lawson on TV and find her recipes wonderful. Have successfully tried a few myself. Great cake photos too!

Oooo yummy. Tamarind, I have to admit I had to stop reading your blog for many weeks because I was suffering from pregnancy-induced nausea. But I’m fine now and am happilly catching up with your delicious food posts! All the best to you, Planet.

sochan08: I haven’t tried any of Nigella Lawson’s cake recipes but I’d like to have a go now that I have her How To Eat cookbook. And Happy Chinese New Year to you!
Kat: Thank you! And Happy Chinese New Year!
mycookinghut: Happy Chinese New Year to you too!
PlanetHalder: Oh! Your baby is going to be a Rat baby – that’s very good! Rats are supposed to be very intelligent; they are first in the list of animals after all!
Steph F: They’re candied pansies, I think. My friend bought them for me in Croatia and this was the first time they’ve come out! Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year. Sorry I’m a bit late with the message. This is one time I wish I was back in London – my parents are heading down to Gerrard Street this afternoon. I might just wander over to El Barrio Chino to see what’s happening here in Barcelona.

Happy Chinese New Year, Trig! Does anything happen in Barcelona? I know the Chinese community has grown quite a bit there but I wonder if they’ve organised anything.
